Thank you to the publisher for my copy - all opinions are my own。 This book didn't quite work for me as a reader - I wanted to like this one so much more but I found myself struggling a bit with a few pieces of this story。 One - the "murder" of the patient that sets off the whole series of the book in reality seemed like a not-very-questionable way for a patient with heart problems to die on an operating table， and in turn it made Anne's （the surgeon） reaction to being found out seem really over Thank you to the publisher for my copy - all opinions are my own。 This book didn't quite work for me as a reader - I wanted to like this one so much more but I found myself struggling a bit with a few pieces of this story。 One - the "murder" of the patient that sets off the whole series of the book in reality seemed like a not-very-questionable way for a patient with heart problems to die on an operating table， and in turn it made Anne's （the surgeon） reaction to being found out seem really over the top and odd。 The disconnect on how extreme her reaction to what happened was distracting for me overall in trying to stay engaged to the plot。 Two - the whiplash of Paula's see-sawing level of interest in her lover was confusing。 I had to flip back a few times because I kept feeling like I was missing something important as to why her mood seemed to keep swinging back and forth from casual indifference to bunny boiling passion。Overall， it is an entertaining enough read， but just one that missed the mark a tad for me。 。。。more

Anne Wiley is a doctor who has it all – handsome， successful， loving husband; great relationship with her mother， a retired surgical nurse; successful surgery practice; a great house … But all is not what it seems – she also has a husband who， unbeknownst to her， has a wandering eye， colleagues who hate hate hate her … and a crisis of conscience when a man who terrorized her in her past winds up on her operating table。I had a love/hate relationship with this book。 The hate part came because the Anne Wiley is a doctor who has it all – handsome， successful， loving husband; great relationship with her mother， a retired surgical nurse; successful surgery practice; a great house … But all is not what it seems – she also has a husband who， unbeknownst to her， has a wandering eye， colleagues who hate hate hate her … and a crisis of conscience when a man who terrorized her in her past winds up on her operating table。I had a love/hate relationship with this book。 The hate part came because the story is told both in first person present tense and past tense and that just irrationally irritates me。 On the plus side， the writing was tight， the plot hummed along， the characters were well-developed， and the ending a surprise。 I enjoyed watching how the author pulled all the story lines into a satisfying， exciting ending， and how everyone who should have got their comeuppance。Even with the irritation at the present tense/past tense issue， I would still read more in this series。 It was interesting to watch someone with so much to lose do what she did and remain sympathetic。 Plus I want to know how things turn out for Dr。 Wiley。The author also writes the Detective Kay Sharp series; the Tess Winnett series; the Baxter& Holt series; and the Alex Hoffmann series。 I have only read the Kay Sharp series， and found that to be an excellent， edge-of-my-seat ride that kept me reading way past my bedtime。 。。。more

I found this interesting medical read with some of the plot devices a bit strange ie this was the first patient that she ever lost and then goes full blown anxiety re being arrested。 The narrator did a really good job of separating out the two voices。 I am glad that I found this author and narrator and will be looking for more b y them。 I was given a free copy by netgalley and the publishers but the review is entirely my own。

This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers。 To view it， click here。 The Surgeon was suspenseful & had some great twists， but all in all I had a hard time liking any of the characters。 There were some great plots & great twists。 I couldn’t get over the fact that Anne was so childish。 She was a top performing surgeon， if not the best， and I had a hard time believing she wouldn’t be a strong， powerful woman。 I think I would’ve like it more had Anne been a little more bad ass。
